Beau Young

Singer — Songwriter — World Champion Surfer

Beau Young is an Australian singer, songwriter and World Champion surfer, carving a strong and loyal fan base in the folk-rock / acoustic music scene.
Crowned a World Champion surfer in both 2000 and 2003, Beau is also a prolific songwriter and today boasts an extensive library of his original songs. He was introduced to music at a young age listening to the sounds of J.J. Cale, Bob Dylan, Neil Young and early Rolling Stones recordings while on long coastal drives exploring surf spots with this family.

With Australian surf ambassador and legend Nat Young as his father, Beau grew up with surfing in his veins and continues to be an ardent surfer, with a deep interest and respect for the ocean.

Over the past decade Beau has also honed his energy into becoming a professional musician – a pursuit spurred on by his good friend, fellow surfer and musician, Ben Harper.

In September 2010 Beau’s second album, One Step at a Time is being distributed via MGM and will be available in music stores.

A collection of 12 songs, One Step at a Time is a folk-rock album, featuring gypsy-inspired lyrics, threaded with harmonica, banjo and bongos. With the exception of We’ve Got it Made, co-written with Paul DiGiacomo, all songs on the album are written by Beau, who also performs lead vocals, guitar and harmonica.

Written over five years, One Step at a Time articulates Beau’s love of nature and his lifelong relationship with the sea. The album also reflects on Beau’s life traversing the globe as a respected pro surfer and musician.

Gliding on Glass, one of the title tracks on One Step at a Time and which pays homage to the ocean and its healing qualities, is featured on Bombora, ABC TV’s popular series about the history of Australian surfing.

In 2006 Beau released the EP Still in both Australia and Japan. The EP features the track Forty Eight Shades, a song Beau was approached to write and record as the title soundtrack for the nationally released Australian film 48 Shades. The song also makes an appearance on One Step at a Time.

In 2005 Beau’s debut album Waves of Change was released in Australia and Japan. The album debuted at #13 on the independent charts in Australia and quickly reached #10 in the following weeks. It stayed in the Top 20 for more than 10 weeks.

Since the international release of Waves of Change, Beau’s music has been included on several compilations including, Beautiful Songs (recorded in Japan for Warner Music), the popular Weekend Sessions (Liberation Music) and the Delightful Rain CD, in which he had the great pleasure of recording the cult classic Simple Ben, borrowed from the iconic Morning of the Earth soundtrack.

Beau has toured extensively to Europe including the UK, France, Portugal, Spain and Germany. He has also toured Japan and in 2009 toured the East and West Coast of the United States, which coincided with the newly released film Searching for Michael Peterson This tour included performances with legendary surfers and musicians Denny Arberg and Rusty Miller. Films Beau has appeared in include Home, Little Black Wheels, Fresh Fruit for Rotten Vegetables and the TV series, Bombora. One Step at a Time will be nationally distributed via MGM in September 2010 and will be available at all good music stores.
